Fishing is a beloved outdoor activity that has been enjoyed for generations, combining skill, patience, and the exhilarating thrill of the catch. Whether you're a seasoned angler with years of experience or a beginner eager to learn, having the right fishing gear is crucial for a successful and enjoyable fishing experience. In this article, we'll explore the essential fishing gear every angler should consider, from selecting the perfect fishing rods and reels to choosing the most effective bait and tackle to enhance your chances of a successful fishing trip. Understanding the importance of quality gear and how it can significantly impact your fishing experience will help you make informed decisions and optimize your time on the water. So, let's dive in and discover the wide array of options available to enhance your fishing adventures and ensure a memorable and rewarding time on the water.
Fishing Licence:
The first and foremost important thing when fishing is acquiring a fishing licence. Most states you can purchase yours online, or at your local bait and tackle shop. If you are out of state and wanting to enjoy a fishing trip, you can purchase a day fishing pass. DNR is strict on fishing permits and you must purchase before your fishing experience. Price varies state to state and depends on what time of fishing you will be enjoying what fishing licence you will need.
Fishing Rods:
Fishing rods can come in different shapes and sizes. Some can be broken down for easy storage, like if you want to pack it in your backpack while hiking to your destination. Some are short, for the creek fishermen and some are long for the far caster. Fishing rods are chosen depending on the fish you are trying to catch. In the midwest an average length fishing rod is the best choice but when going to small creeks a smaller one is ideal. A Zebco fishing rod or an Ugly stick fishing rod are both great quality and great price for fishing in the midwest.
Fishing Reels:
There is closed-faced reels and open-faced reels. A beginner usually starts with a closed-face real. THat is the reel with just a button on top for casting and reeling in your fish. An open-faced reel has an exposed spinning line for a more precise cast and can be more easily adjusted. Depending on your fishing experience level and your precision skill needed, both can be just good for a fishing outing. The one below is an open-faced reel by Ugly stick.
Fishing Line:
Most fishing poles come with line already on them but that doesn't mean they are equipped with the correct kind for your fishing trip. Fishing line choice is dependent on the fish size you are wanting to get. 4-12 test is average for freshwater fishing. Always lean toward the higher test fishing line, as a broken line with a big ol' bass on the end can make for an unfortunate ending.
Fishing Tackle:
Having a stocked tackle box is a great way to house all your fishing gear tackle. Tackle starts with your hooks and bobbers. The hook size you want on the end of your line is also dependant on the fish you are wanting. A vary small hook is for the smaller fish and the medium to large hooks are for the larger fish. If a larger fish bites a smaller hook it can easily pull away from the hook. Fishing tackle sets are great to start out with the basic fishing hooks, swivels, and sinkers. Another must for the tackle box would be pliers. This basic fishing tackle starter kit is a great choice at just around $30.
One of our favorite fishing tackle bags is the backpack one by Rodeel that hold 2 fishing poles and has four tackle boxes inside.
Fishing Bait and Lures:
There are live bait and artificial lures. Live bate consists of worms, grubs, mealworms, and other small fish like chads. Artificial lures are lures that resemble all the live bait. There are so many different selections out there to try, but one of our favorite brands are Rebel. Give a few a try and you'll find your favorite in no time. We personally enjoy live bait the best for our fishing journeys.
Investing in high-quality fishing gear is an essential step that can significantly enhance your chances of success on the water and contribute to a more enjoyable fishing experience. Whether you're casting from the shore or trolling in a boat, having the right combination of top-notch rods, reels, and tackle at your disposal will help you make the most of your time on the water. So, gear up with the best equipment, hit the water, and immerse yourself in the thrill of the catch! With the right gear, you can elevate your fishing game and create unforgettable moments on the water that will stay with you for a lifetime.
